1. English speaking world

In this course we will be dealing with English speaking countries including cultural and social aspects, music, food, customs and traditions as well as current issues.

2. Intercultural communication

In this elective course, we examine how people from different cultures communicate and interact with each other. Hence, we explore cultural values, communication styles and everyday life situations to better understand other cultures, similarities with our own culture and misunderstandings. Therefore, we engage in discussions, look at media examples and focus on lots of practical activities. The aim is that students develop empathy, openness and skills for communicating successfully in English, the global language connecting people across countries and cultures.

3. Exploring US teen shows

In this elective course, we explore popular US American teen shows. We watch key scenes, discuss characters and storylines and analyze themes such as love, friendship, identity, school life and social media. Students learn to reflect on how these topics relate to their own lives and cultural experiences.

4. Language Uncovered – A Basic Introduction to Linguistics

Warum klingt Englisch so, wie es klingt? Warum können wir neue Wörter sofort verstehen? Und wie erkennt man Lügen allein durch Sprache?
In diesem Wahlpflichtfach schauen wir unter die Oberfläche von Sprache: Du lernst, Laute zu hören wie ein Profi, Wörter zu zerlegen, einfache Transkriptionen zu machen und zu verstehen, wie Sätze aufgebaut sind. Im zweiten Teil des Kurses geht es weiter zu spannenden Themen wie Sprache & Gesellschaft, Spracherwerb, Forensic Linguistics (Sprache in Kriminalfällen) und Sprache im Gehirn.
Perfekt für alle, die Sprache nicht nur lernen, sondern verstehen wollen und merken möchten, warum viele Language-in-Use-Aufgaben plötzlich Sinn ergeben.

5. Who needs normal when there is „STRANGER THINGS“?

Let’s discuss, analyze and be creative!

We will challenge stereotypes and discuss how „normal“ versus „strange“ is defined. Key aspects will  of course be the power of friendship and outcasts. So we will talk about all the characters and you will get a chance to create new or different scenes.
